 Our History

November 16, 1885

The Abingdon Library Association began the library and sold 500 membership tickets for January 1, 1896 to January 1, 1897.

The original library collection was housed in the Blair Building on Main Street.

April 1898

The Abingdon Library Association handed over the assets to the city of Abingdon.

1913

Construction of the current building began after John Mosser committed to the funding of the library after the city purchased the land.

Unfortunately, John Mosser died before construction was finished and his son Lloyd L. supervised the remainder of the project.

1914

The Mosser family turned over the library and it’s property to the city.

1960

$28,000 was given by Lloyd L. and his wife for the construction of the building’s new addition. Land was also donated by Lloyd L. and his wife for the building of the addition. The library continued to be funded by private subscription until a tax levy was voted into law.

1990

After a unanimous vote, a referendum to the Abingdon voters to form a library district passed.
